This is a tale of two teams going in opposite directions as the season winds down. The White Sox snapped an eight-game skid by beating the Twins Thursday afternoon in the finale of that set though they have been eliminated from playoff contest. Chicago sends Davis Martin to the hill in this contest and while he's been good in September, allowing four runs over 17 innings in three starts, his last win came back on August 9. The White Sox have a winning road record but with having nothing to play for, you have to be concerned about their motivation. San Diego had won eight of 10 before dropping the final two games of their series against the Dodgers but they saw their magic number to clinch a playoff spot reduced to three. They send Yu Darvish to the mound in this contest on an extra day of rest, while Mike Clevinger will have a similar situation Saturday. Darvish is 16-7 with a 3.05 ERA, a 0.933 WHIP, 36 walks and 191 strikeouts over 188.2 innings in 29 starts. He has matched his career-high for wins that he set back in his rookie season of 2012. Darvish has won six straight starts, posting a 1.80 ERA, a 0.725 WHIP, nine walks and 44 strikeouts over 40 innings in that stretch. Throw in a 7-2 record with a 2.45 ERA, a 0.83 WHIP, 17 walks and 79 strikeouts over 80.2 innings at Petco Park and the Padres are set up nicely here. San Diego sees Darvish do the job on the mound while the big bats in the lineup deliver the offense for the win.
