The #16 North Carolina Tar Heels take on the UNLV Rebels in the Maui Invitational. North Carolina is coming off a 79-60 win over the College of Charleston. UNLV opened the season with a 91-78 loss at home to Montana State. After a disappointing season last year, the Tar Heels look to have a better season behind a youth movement. North Carolina shot just 39.4 percent from the field, including just four of 18 from three-point range, and will have to improve that against UNLV. Caleb Love led the Tar Heels with 17 points and they had four players in double figures.
UNLV was terrible on both ends of the court in their opener. The Rebels trailed by double-digits for the final 26 minutes of the contest. They were down 18 at the half and never made a serious run after that. They shot well, hitting 45.5 percent from the field, including an 11 of 25 showing from three. They allowed Montana State to shoot 55.6 percent from the field, including 10 of 18 from three-point range. The Rebels turned the ball 18 times. Bryce Hamilton had 27 points in the loss.
UNLV could not stop Montana State on the defensive end of the floor. If they don't they will be in for a long night against a North Carolina team that is offensively better than Montana State. The Tar Heels showed solid defensive work in their win over the College of Charleston. North Carolina has a good mix of youth and experience, which works in their favor.
