Jacksonville State is coming into this game off of a very impressive 1st season in FBS, finishing 9-4 last season. They won the first 2 games of their season last year and were a threat in the Conference USA as well, but now that they have a full FBS season under their belt, they will be hungry to improve this season and take home the CUSA Championship. They were much better at home last season as they were 5-1 there and all 5 of those wins were by at least 3 points. Their defense was also very good in those games as they allowed less than 20 points in 5 of their 6 games at home, and their defense was very good in general as they were averaging 21.2 points allowed per game. They were also very good on offense, averaging 30.2 points scored per game, and they had a very strong prescence on the ground with their run game. They are going up against a Coastal Carolina team that was 8-5 last season, but they have lost a lot of key pieces so Tim Beck is going to struggle a lot more in his 2nd season as coach here. They lost their starting quarterback Grayson McCall who has been leading their offense over the last few years so that is going to be a big change for them this season and they lack a lot of talent on the receiving end as well. Their biggest losses came on defense though as they lost their top 3 defenders who led the team in tackles. They also lost some key pieces on the defensive line which will not be good here as Jacksonville State loves to run the ball. Coastal Carolina was already on the decline last season but now there are going to be too many changes for them to overcome this season against an improving Jacksonville State team, and this is a big revenge game for the Gamecocks at home who lost 30-16 on the road against Coastal last season. Jacksonville State will cover the spread in this game.
