There are four dominant teams in the American League and this game features two of them. Anytime one of them has a starting pitching edge and is an underdog that side usually needs to be backed. That's my thinking on taking the Indians in a pitching matchup of Mike Clevinger versus Domingo German.
I understand it's tough to step in against New York, winners of 14 of its last 15. But Clevinger is a proven commodity. The same can't be said for German, who is 0-1 with a 3.77 ERA in relief. He's making his first big league start because Jordan Montgomery went on the DL with a left elbow strain.
Clevinger is overlooked on a great Cleveland pitching staff. He's put up awesome numbers during his last 14 appearances dating back to Aug. 21 going 8-1 with a 1.88 ERA. The 27-year-old is in his prime and has fared well on the road going 10-5 with a 3.28 ERA in 23 career road outings. Clevinger hasn't allowed an earned run in two road starts this season spanning 14 1/3 innings.
The Indians have left nine of 10 runners stranded in losing the first two games of this series. Look for the Indians to get some key hits this time around in what very well could turn into a bullpen game for the Yankees with a vast array of middle relievers seeing action.
(Editor's note: Stephen Nover has one of his strongest Sunday cards of the year going today. He is going for his 13th win in his last 15 NBA plays with his NBA Sunday Spread Crusher. Stephen also has his Puck Line Game of the Week and is in action with the Sunday Night ESPN baseball game. Don't miss any of his winners, all of which are guaranteed!)
