It's been a rough season for Appalachian State, especially having to deal with the destruction in their area of Boone, N.C., caused by Hurricane Helene. It would be a huge plus for the school and community if the Mountaineers were able to go to a bowl game.
But to do this the Mountaineers have to beat Georgia Southern on the road. They are not favored. My interest is in the Under.
Appalachian State has gone from a heavy passing attack to being ground-oriented behind running back Ahmani Marshall. Mountaineers QB Joey Aguilar averaged 41.6 passes during the first six games. He's averaged 26.2 throws during the last four games. The Mountaineers are without their top wide receiver, injured Kaedin Robinson.
So I expect Appalachian State to maintain a conservative, ball-control style that keeps the clock moving, especially being prone to turnovers having committed 20, which ranks 118th.
Georgia State has given up 23 or fewer points in six of 11 games. The Eagles are off an impressive, 26-6, win against Coastal Carolina. They limited Coastal Carolina to not only six points, but 280 yards of offense.
The Eagles are not dynamic offensively ranking 92nd in yards gained and 109th in rushing. Appalachian State's defensive strength is its pass defense.
(Editor's note: Stephen Nover is enjoying a winning college football season and is on a 5-1 premium/free play run. Stephen has three premium Saturday CFB plays, in addition to this free selection, headed by his ACC Game of the Year.)
