Result: Loss
This is a 7* SITUATIONAL PITCHING MISMATCH on the Washington Nationals.
We had a play on the Rays yesterday and are very conscience not to "flip-flop" on teams, however that's a theory which can be faulty as well, from a game to game basis, MLB handicapping primarily comes down to the starting pitching and in this case I think the home side is definitely worth the price of admission. The visitors hand the ball to Matt Andriese (1-1, 3.76 ERA) who would notch his first career win over the White Sox on Friday, giving up two runs over 5 2/3's innings. Obviously the book is still out on the rookie, but there's no question that he faces a tough task in throwing opposite Jordan Zimmermann (5-4, 3.74 ERA) who is coming off an outing to forget in which he gave up six runs off nine hits over just 3 1/3's innings vs. the Brewers on Friday. It was in fact the second straight sub-par outing for the veteran, who has to actually be liking his chances in a bounce back effort today, despite scuffling of late Zimmermann is still 3-2 with a highly respectable 2.58 ERA in front of the home town crowd and an even better 4-1 with a 2.92 ERA in all "night" games. A pretty fair price for Zimmermann in this match-up, lay it with confidence, play on the NATIONALS.
UPDATE: There has been a pitching change for the visitors, Matt Andriese is out and Steven Geltz (1-2, 2.63 ERA) is in. THIS PLAY IS STILL ACTIVE. Geltz is used primarily out of the bullpen, his numbers are decent this year (30 K's over 27 1/3's innings of work), but note that he's clearly going to have his hands full today in this spot start and after his team was destroyed yesterday.
