This is an 8* play on the OVER between the Orlando Magic and the Detroit Pistons.
While we are primarily a situationally based handicapping service, we don't prescribe to any one single methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions, are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.
This particular play is based on a few different factors:
- Motivation: These teams are vastly improved from last season and are only separated by a single game in the standings, Orlando sits in No. 7 in the East right now. This is the first of three between the teams this year. This is an important game, so we're expecting each to push the pace of this one and a faster game = more shots and more shots = more points. Both teams will also be extra motivated as each comes in on losing streak, Orlando has lost two in a row, while Detroit enters after losing four of its last five, including a listless 94-82 setback at Indiana on Saturday.
- Brandon Jennings: Detroit has slowly been working Jennings back into the mix and the guard is poised for a breakout game after returning from injury, he had 24 points and 21 assists the last time he faced the Magic.
- Strong and relevant ATS statistics: note that Orlando has seen the total go OVER the number in 12 of its last 21 after playing to three or more consecutive UNDERs, while Detroit has seen the total sail above the posted number in 11 of its last 19 after scoring 85 points or less.
The bottom line: Two playoff hopeful teams which come together on extended losing streaks, in our opinion, all signs point to a shootout, play on the OVER.
