This is an 8* play on the OVER between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Washington Wizards.
While we are primarily a situationally based handicapping service, we don't prescribe to any one single methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions, are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.
This particular play is based on a few different factors:
Kyrie Irving: Cleveland's point guard is looking like his old self finally, he just scored 25 points and finished with eight assists and six boards in his team's 122-100 annihilation of the Raptors on Monday. Irving wasn't playing when the Wizards cruised past the Cavaliers for a 97-85 road win in December, so the motivation for revenge will be high today for the visitors overall: "We only have one back-to-back," said LeBron James last night, who had 24 points and nine turnovers in what remains the Cavs' lone home loss. "We'll see what happens. It starts in D.C., a team that beat us really good. We remember that."
John Wall: The Wizards won't be rolling over obviously, Wall has played a key role in battling against the Cavaliers, averaging 20.4 points and 9.1 assists in the last nine matchups. Washington also comes in motivated, it's dropped three of four, most recently a disturbing 97-75 setback at Miami on Sunday. The expected return of Gary Neal and Nene to the lineup is much needed.
Strong and relevant ATS statistics: Note that the Cavs have seen the total go OVER the number in seven of ten this year after a win by ten points or more and in seven of 12 after three or more consecutive SU victories, while Washington has seen the total sail above the posted number in five of six this season when playing with two or more days of rest and in 11 of 17 when playing the role of underdog.
The bottom line: We're expecting each team to attack from start to finish and a faster paced games = more shots and more shots = more points. Play on the OVER.
