This is a 10* EAST-COAST TOTAL EXPRESS on the UNDER between the Atlanta Hawks and the Philadelphia 76ers.
While we are primarily a situationally based handicapping service, we don't prescribe to any one single methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions, are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.
This particular play is based on a few different factors:
Motivation: The 21-15 Atlanta Hawks can ill afford to "look past" the lowly 76ers today as they've lost three of their last four: "It's frustrating because I feel like we are playing hard," Hawks' centre Al Horford assessed last night. "We're doing some good things out there but we keep having mental lapses as a group, forgetting assignments, little things."
Hawks' stars struggling with consistency: Jeff Teague had no assists in a setback to the Knicks last time out and has just 15 assists to 13 turnovers in the last four games.
Improved play from the home side: Since Ish Smith joined the team, Philadelphia has won three of four, most recently a 109-99 home victory over Minnesota; certainly the 76ers will be motivated here as they've dropped eight of the last nine in the series and we expect this determination to translate into defensive production on the court.
Strong and relevant Over/Under ATS statistics: Note that Atlanta has seen the total go UNDER the number in nine of 16 this year vs. teams with losing records and in four of its last six as a road fav in the 6.5 to 9 points range, while Philadelphia has seen the total dip below the posted number in both games that it's played this year off an upset win as an underdog and in four of five after scoring 105 points or more.
The bottom line: We believe there are enough significant factors pointing to the UNDER to warrant pulling the trigger on this as a top rated 10* selection.
