This is an 8* play on the OVER between the Orlando Magic and the Brooklyn Nets.
While we are primarily a situationally based handicapping service, we don't prescribe to any one single methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions, are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.
This particular play is based on a few different factors:
Desperation breeds motivation: Orlando is looking to avoid its longest losing skid of the year, while Brooklyn looks to break an eight game home slide (the Nets also play with double revenge after dropping both to the Magic this season). We feel that the focus and determination that each team plays with tonight will translate into production on the court.
Brook Lopez: The center has been a bright spot for Brooklyn despite the sluggish play, he's averaging 24.6 points and 11.6 boards over his last five games, which includes a 24-point, 15-rebound performance in last week's loss to the Magic.
ATS statistics: Note that this is in fact a position in which each team has shown an penchant to playing to the higher number, as Orlando has seen the total sail above number in eight of its last 12 when trying to avoid a four-game slide, while Brooklyn has seen the total go OVER the number in seven of its last 11 when playing with double revenge.
The bottom line: With each team desperate for a victory, we're expecting each to push the pace of this one from the outset and a faster paced game = more shots and more shots = more points. Play on the OVER.
