Total: 202.50 | -110.00 Under
Result: Win
This is a 10* TOTAL ASSASSIN on the OVER between the Charlotte Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans.
While we are primarily a situationally based handicapping service, we don't subscribe to any one single methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions, are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.
This particular play is based on a few different factors:
Desperation levels for both teams: The Hornets are 18-20 this year, while the Pelicans are 12-26. Obviously neither club is where it wants to be with its overall performance level right now, but each comes in off a victory, Charlotte beat Atlanta 107-84 to snap a season-worst seven-game slide, while New Orleans prevailed 109-97 over Sacramento on Wednesday. Neither will be satisfied though, the Hornets have lost eight straight on the road, while the Pelicans have lost three straight in front of the home town crowd. We feel that the focus and determination in which each team comes to play with tonight will translate into production on the court.
ATS statistics: Note that this is a position in which each team has shown a penchant to playing to the higher number in, as Charlotte has seen the total go OVER the number in eight of ten after scoring 105 points or more this year, in seven of ten after a victory by ten points or more, in four of six off an upset win as an underdog and in three of four after playing to three or more consecutive UNDERS, while New Orleans has seen the total sail above the posted number in four of five this season after playing three consecutive road games.
The bottom line: In our professional opinion, all signs point to a faster paced game and a faster game = more shots and more shots = more points. Play on the OVER.
