Point Spread: 3.00 | -125.00 NY Jets (Home)
Result: Loss
The set-up: The 8-5 Miami Dolphins haven't reached the playoffs since winning the AFC East in 2008 but enter Week 15 tied with the Denver Broncos for the final wild-card spot, although the Broncos enjoy the tiebreaker via a better strength of victory. The 4-9 NY Jets were 3-5 after eight games but four straight losses took care of any playoff ‘dreams' the team may have harbored and their 23-17 (OT) win over the 49ers last Sunday is hardly anything to brag about. After all, the 49ers have lost 12 in a row since opening the 2016 season with 28-0 MNF win over the rams.
Miami: The Dolphins' six-game winning streak was snapped 38-6 by the Ravens in Week 13 but while Miami rebounded with a 26-23 win over the Cardinals last Sunday, the Dolphins lost starting QB Ryan Tannehill to a left knee injury. The Dolphins selected Tannehill in the first round of the 2012 draft and he's started the first 77 games of his career but Matt Moore will take his place Sunday, ending that streak. Moore went 3-of-5 for 47 yards and directed the game-winning drive last week but he has attempted just 35 passes since the start of the 2012 season. First-year head coach Adam Gase would like to take some of the pressure off the veteran QB and lean on RB Jay Ajayi. Ajayi ran for 111 yards in Miami's 27-23 victory over New York back on on Nov. 6 recorded back-to-back 200-yard performances in Weeks 6 & 7 but he has struggled to get untracked of late with 154 yards on 50 carries over his last three games. However, the Jets rush D was gashed for 193 rushing yards by the 49ers' Carlos Hyde last Sunday.
NY Jets: New York snapped a four-game losing skid in San Francisco last Sunday, as Bilal Powell exploded for 145 rushing yards and two TD on 29 carries. Powell should receive the bulk of the work against Miami's 30th-ranked rush defense (133.8 YPG game) with veteran running back Matt Forte nursing a knee injury. QB Bryce Petty will make his third career start in this one, as he was named the permanent starter immediately after a 41-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Dec. 5. He earned his first NFL win on Sunday, when he led the Jets to 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and overtime of a 23-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers (he completed 23 of 35 for 257 yards without a TD and one INT).
The pick: I smell a little ‘revenge' here, as the Dolphins beat the Jets 27-23 back on Nov. 6, when Kenyan Drake returned a kickoff 96 yards for the go-ahead TD with 5:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. Note that ALL of Miami's victories have come in either South Florida or Southern California this year and the Dolphins have covered just one of their last 13 December games. Simply put, the Dolphins are not a cold-weather team and how does one trust Miami's grit in weather conditions like they'll see Saturday night or Matt Moore's QB skills (or lack thereof)? The Jets are an 8* play.
