(NHL) Colorado vs. Winnipeg,
Money Line: -180.00 Winnipeg (Home)
Result: Win
Money Line: -180.00 Winnipeg (Home)
Result: Win
The set-up: A pair of struggling teams play this afternoon in Winnipeg, as the 11-17-0 Colorado Avalanche take on the 14-6-2 Winnipeg Jets. The Avalanche come to town having lost nine of their last 11 games, while the Jets had lost four straight until a 4-3 shootout victory over Florida on Thursday. The good news, is somebody is going to win Sunday afternoon's match.
Colorado: The Avalanche have just 23 points, the fewest of any NHL team but maybe getting away from home is a good thing, as the Avalanche own the league's worst home record at 4-10-1 and have currently lost seven games in a row in the Pepsi Center (0-6-1). Goaltender Calvin Pickard (5-5-1, 2.88 goals-against average, .904 goals-against average) gets the start for Colorado on Sunday in his hometown, as Semyon Varlamov is still recovering from a groin injury;.
Winnipeg: The Jets gave up three power-play goals in the second period against Florida but did win in a shootout but that's hardly good hockey. The Jets dropped to 28th in the league on the penalty kill and have given up at least one power-play goal in four straight games. On the flipside, their own power play has fizzled over the past five games, going an anemic 1-for-14. "At this point, confidence is pretty low (with the power play)," Jets captain Blake Wheeler told the Winnipeg Free Press. "So, it's something you've gotta work for. The power play is supposed to be your best players on the ice, on the penalty kill you're trying to shut down their top guys. It's not really rocket science. We've got to find a way to build that confidence and get into a rhythm. It doesn't really seem like there's much of a plan right now."
The pick: For all of Winnipeg's problems, a home game vs. the Avalanche is a great spot to pick up two points. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 41 saves in Thursday's victory and here at home, owns a 2.40 GAA compared to 3.27 on the road. make Winnipeg a 10* play.
