Point Spread: 5.00 | -110.00 Towson (Home)
Result: Loss
The set-up: The Towson Tigers take a 7-4 record to Las Vegas and meet the Nevada Wolf Pack (who have opened 9-2) in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic. Nevada enters on a four-game winning streak, while Towson has won its last three games.
Towson: The Tigers won 20 games last season and played here in Las Vegas in the postseason, in the inaugural Vegas 16 Tourney, losing their first game. They lost guard Hawkins (13.2 PPG) from last year but return a solid group. Guards Morsell (17.8 & 4.3) and Mormon (10.5) are joined in double figures by forwards Moto (13.1 & 6.6) and Davis (11.1 & 7.3). Towson averages 75.0 PPG but plays pretty good defense, allowing 65.7 PPG (71st) on 38.8% shooting (35th).
Nevada: The Wolf Pack are off a 23-win season and won last year's CBI postseason tourney. Eric Musselman lost just one starter from that team, although Coleman (15.1-4.3-3.3) was Nevada's best player. The 6-7 Foster (12.0 & 7.4 this year) is currently suspended for violating team rules and no timetable is set for his return. The Wolf Pack are currently starting a four-guard lineup, led by Marshall (20.1) and Carolina (11.7), who is also the team's leading rebounder at 9.1 per game. Drew is the point guard (6.7-5.0-5.8) and Fenner comes off the bench to average 12.3 PPG. With Foster suspended, the team has just one frontcourt player of note but he's a good one, as the 6-8 Oliver is averaging 16.2 & 6.5.
The pick: Nevada is the better team but even in going 5-0 SU at home this year, those wins have come by just 2.3 PPG. Las Vegas is a familiar turf for the team from Reno but it's not home. Towson has lost four times this season but by an average of just 4.5 PPG. Take the points and make Towson a 10* play.
