One of the sharps I confab with has pointed out that in recent years one of the strongest evolving angles is to fade first year NFL head coaches on a short week, especially early in the year.
Yes this applies even to veteran head coaches who are in their first season with that team, such as Lovie Smith with Tampa against Atlanta. This is exacerbated though if it is a first year head coach with any team and it is on the road.
Already this season it has applied to Lovie Smith in Tampa lost 56-14 and first-year anywhere Jay Gruden lost 45-14 to Giants. Now Mike Zimmer not just first year with team, but also first year coach and he hits road with a team fat and happy off the upset win over Atlanta.
QB Teddy Bridgewater has a sprained ankle and second ever start both in five days. First year coach, second start QB, playing at one of the toughest stadiums in the NFL, do you see where we are going? The only possibility is that horrid QB Christian Ponder becomes the Vikings third starting QB in three weeks.
For Green Bay, this is just their second home game. Lost on road defending World Champs and on road to box of chocolate Lions. Green Bay still averaging 7.2 yards per pass to teams normally permitting 6.5.
A week after a loss to the Detroit Lions that featured his second-lowest passing yardage total (162) in a game he started and finished, Rodgers threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns on 22-of-28 passing. His efficiency and production were such that his passer rating of 151.2 fell short of only one other performance in his career, a 155.4 mark in a win
Good teams players do not limit taking out frustrations to one game. So the chip on their shoulder from a 1-2 start was not erased last week. Look for Green Bay to still have an edge to their game.
Eddie Lacy will bounce back. Lacy had every rushing attempt except for one, but averaged just 2.8 yards on 17 carries and broke only one tackle. He had broken 11 tackles in the first three games. This is one of those times to lay the lumber!
