(NCAAF) North Carolina vs. Virginia Tech,
Point Spread: -5.00 | -110.00 North Carolina (Away)
Result: Loss
The North Carolina Tar Heels had a nice season last year but will be looking for more. They finished with an 8-4 overall record and finished 7-3 in the ACC. Last season, the offense put up 41.7 points a game and the defense gave up 29.4 The Tar Heels return Sam Howell at quarterback. As the leader of the offense last year, the team put up 537 total yards a game and 41.7points. On a personal level, he threw for 3,586 yards, to go with 30 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. the offense does have things to work out as they lost their top two running backs and two top receivers. They do have some talent at wideout that will need to step up this season. Ty Chandler rushed for over 2,000 yards in his four years with Tennessee and comes in as a Grad transfer. On the plus side, the entire offensive line is back. They do have to replace their leading tackler on defense, but the rest of the D should be solid and they have one of the best secondaries in the ACC returning.

The Virginia Tech Hokies did not have a great season, finishing with a 5-6 record under Justin Fuente. The Hokies offense put up 31.1 points a game while their defense was a sieve, allowing 32.1. Quarterbacks Hendon Hooker and Quincy Patterson transferred so the Hokies will be going with Braxton Burmeister under center. They will look to replace running back Khalil Herbert and expect to see Jalen Holston and Raheem Blackshear get carries. They do have returning receivers Tre Turner and Tayvion Robinson, who combined 72 catches, and over 1,100 yards and 6 TDs. The Hokies defense was atrocious last season, giving up the most PPg at 32.1 since 1973. As bad as the defense was, Amare Barno led the ACC with 16 TFLs last season. They have a lot of returning players so they should be able to put things together.

North Carolina has a Heisman Trophy candidate in Howell. They did lose some skill position players but return their whole offensive line which should be able to open wholes for whoever is running the football. Virginia Tech's defense was historically bad and the QB situation is not ideal. It may take NC a little bit of time to get things going but when they do they will have more than enough to take down VT at home.
