The set-up: The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis each had Monday off but the two NL Central rivals have a busy Tuesday on hand, as a day-night doubleheader kicks off a four-game series. The Brewers opened a seven-game road trip by dropping two of three at Arizona this past weekend but a a modest 33-31, still lead the division, as they are the only team with a winning record. St. Louis is used to being on top in this division (2016 being an exception) and at 29-32, will try to chip away at their deficit in this home series against the division leaders. The Cardinals had dropped seven straight prior to this past weekend but got back on track with a three-game sweep of the ML-worst Philadelphia to begin a seven-game homestand.
The pitching matchup (Game 1): Jimmy Nelson (4-3 & 3.45 ERA) will get the start for Milwaukee and Lance Lynn (4-3 & 2.88 ERA) for St. Louis. Nelson allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings.in a 6-3 Wednesday win over the Giants, which followed a pair of outstanding efforts in which he gave up just one run while striking out 21 and not walking a batter in 15 innings in his previous two starts (a win and a no-decision). Nelson had some control issues in his lone start so far this year against the Cards, as he walked six and was charged with three ERs over 5 1/3 innings of a 6-4 home loss back on April 23. Then again, struggling against the Cards is nothing new for Nelson. He is 0-7 with a 6.75 ERA in nine career starts (team is 2-7) against St. Louis. Lynn did not complete six innings in any of his last three outings but allowed a modest 11 hits in 15 1/3 innings over those three starts. However, teh Cards lost all three games. In fact, Lynn's last win came all the way back on May 5 and Lynn is win-less in his last six outings (Cards have lost his last five starts!). The good news here for the Cards is that Lynn has exceptional career numbers vs. the Brewers, going 9-3 with a 2.31 ERA in 19 games (15 starts / team is 10-5).
The pick: Nelson's struggles against St. Louis go back the last four-plus seasons, so there is little reason for that to change here. As for Lynn, he's pitched way better than his record (owns a .191 batting average against overall in 2017), has been outstanding against the Brewers in his career and at home in 207, owns a 1.85 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. Make the Cards a 10* play.
