Rogers' EARLY Afternoon ASSAULT >>> SICK 100-57-3 MLB Run!
(MLB) Philadelphia vs. NY Mets,
Money Line: -152.00 NY Mets (Home)
Result: Loss
The set-up: The New York Mets opened a recent 10-game homestand by getting swept in a four-game series by the Dodgers but the team rebounded to win five of its last six games. New York returned home Friday to open a three-game home series against the MLB-worst Phillies and the team has continued to make a run at .500 with wins Friday (2-1) and Saturday (7-6). Saturday's win makes it four in a row and the Mets will try to make it five in a row and eight of nine when they host the Phillies in the finale of their three-game series on Sunday. As noted, the 26-53 Phillies own the worst record in the majors and are losers of 18 of their last 23 contests, overall.

The pitching matchup: Rookie Nick Pivetta (1-4 & 5.40 ERA) takes the mound for Philadelphia and Rafael Montero (1-4 & 5.63 ERA) for New York. Pivetta is coming off the worst start of his young career, allowing six runs on seven hits and five walks over 2 2/3 innings in a 6-1 loss at the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. He had pitched much better in his previous two outings, allowing a total of just three runs in 13 innings (2.08) while striking out 19 and walking only three. Pivetta is taking on the division-rival Mets for the first time. Montero is getting an opportunity to keep a rotation spot and earned a win in a start at San Francisco last Sunday while surrendering one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He did not fare nearly as well in his other two spot starts of 2017, allowing a total of eight runs in 6 2/3 innings (10.80 ERA). However, he thrived as a long reliever in two June appearances before earning another chance in the rotation. Montero suffered a loss in relief against Philadelphia on April 18, managing one out while yielding four runs - three earned - on four hits. Montero is 0-1 with a 12.00 ERA in five career games (one start) against the Phillies.

The pick: Montero is hardly "a stud" but New York is taking advantage a recent schedule that includes sub-.500 foes San Francisco (32-51), Miami (35-44) and the Phillies. The pitching staff has allowed an average of just 2.6 runs in the team's seven victories (over an eight-game span). What's to like about the Phillies, who come in 12-33 on the road, the worst road mark in MLB. The Mets are an 8* play.
