The set-up: The Houston Astros own MLB's best overall record on the strength of the team's outstanding road record. Houston pounded out 14 hits in Friday's a 12-2 victory at Toronto, improving to 21-4 away from home since the middle of May (Astros are 32-10 away from home on the season, owning MLB's best moneyline mark of plus-$). George Springer had four hits (including two HRs) to go along with five RBI. Jose Altuve added three hits for the Astros to raise his major league-leading average to .342, and Carlos Correa hit his 18th HR to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, giving him the longest active run in the majors. The Blue Jays dropped to 40-46 with the loss Friday, leaving them tied with Baltimore in the AL East basement, 9 1/2 games back of the Red Sox. The Blue Jays, who have played in the last two ALCS matchups, just can't seem to get "back in the race," after opening 2017 by going 7-18 in April (started the season 2-11).
The pitching matchup: Mike Fiers (5-3 & 3.80 ERA) will start for Houston and Marcus Stroman (8-5 & 3.42 ERA) for Toronto. Fiers didn't have his "A game" in his last outing against the Yankees. He needed 105 pitches to get through four innings but he struck out seven (did allow four walks) and was pulled after four scoreless innings in a game the Astros won 8-1. Opponents have managed 16 hits in 30 innings over Fiers' last five outing, part of an eight-start stretch in which the Astros are 6-2 when he takes the mound (1.93 ERA). Fiers is 1-2 with a 4.07 ERA in three career starts against the Blue Jays and that includes him allowing five runs (four earned) in 4 2/3 innings in his only prior start at the Rogers Centre. Stroman allowed two runs in five innings last Monday at Yankee Stadium (Yanks won 6-3). It marked the 13th time in 17 starts in 2017 in which he has allowed three ERs or less. Stroman has faced the Astros just three times in his career, going 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA (team is 1-2).
The pick: Always a little dangerous going against the Astros, especially on the road (see above) but Stroman owns a strong 2.87 ERA in nine home starts this season for the Blue Jays and I'm not ready to quit just yet on this Toronto team. Make the Blue Jays a 10* play.
