(MLB) San Diego vs. Philadelphia,
Money Line: -143.00 Philadelphia (Home)
Result: Loss
The set: The 37-49 Padres and the 28-57 Phillies continue their three-game set tonight in Philadelphia. San Diego Padres catcher Austin Hedges, who leads NL catchers with 13 HRs, went deep in each of his first two at-bats in his first career start at Citizens Bank Park and after a long rain delay before delivered a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth to give San Diego a 4-3 victory. It marked the Padres' fourth win in five games, while the Phillies dropped their fourth straight contest. Neither team is going anywhere in 2017, as San Diego is 21 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West and Phildelphia sits 22 1/2 games back of the Nats in the NL East.

The pitching matchup: Jhoulys Chacin (7-7 & 4.52 ERA) will take the mound for the Padres and Aaron Nola (6-5 & 3.73 ERA) for the Phillies. Chacin bested the Dodgers 5-3 last Sunday in San Diego, continuing his home dominance in 2017. He's 5-2 with a 1.68 ERA in nine home starts but away from pitching-friendly Petco, he has been among the worst starting pitchers in MLB this season. He owns an abysmal 9.08 ERA in eight road starts. He hasn't faced the Phillies since 2014 but is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in seven appearances (five starts / teams are 2-3) versus Philadelphia. Nola won his third consecutive start Monday against Pittsburgh, firing seven scoreless innings while allowing four hits and striking out eight in a 4-0 Philly win. He has posted a 1.27 ERA during his win streak, striking out at least eight each time. Nola is 4-2 in six starts with a 2.68 ERA since the beginning of June, He has three career starts against San Diego, going 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA (team is 2-1).

The pick: Chacin home/away dichotomy is real, evidenced also by his 0.92 WHIP in San Diego, compared to a 1.99 WHIP on the road. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Phillies' pitching staff has lacked a true ace since trading Cole Hamels midway through the 2015 season. I don't want to carried away but Nola, a 24-year-old who was the club's first-round pick in 2014, looks like a budding ace. He's won three straight, going at least seven innings in each, while posting a 1.27 ERA (three ERs allowed in 21 1/3 innings pitched). With Chacin's road woes, make the Phillies an 8* play.
