The set-up: The Milwaukee Brewers lost 6-3 on Sunday at Philadelphia, giving them seven losses in their last eight games. That left them in a tie with the surging Cubs in the NL Central. However, Milwaukee not only got a much-needed off day on Monday but while the Brewers were traveling to Washington, the White Sox broke a nine-game slide by beating the Cubs 3-1 Monday afternoon at Wrigley. Now, as the Brewers get set to open a three-games series in Washington against the NL East-leading Nationals, they are clinging to a half-game lead in their own division. Washington also had Monday off and the Nats, 7-2 since the All-Star break, own a commanding 12 1/2 game lead over the Braves at 59-38 in the NL East.
The pitching matchup: Zach Davies (11-4 & 4.76 ERA) gets the call for Milwaukee and Edwin Jackson (1-0 & 4.50 ERA) for Washington. Davies received a no-decision after allowing one run (unearned) and eight hits in seven innings of Milwaukee's 3-2 loss at Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Davies has been Milwaukee's ace in 2017 and all season-long, has pitched way better on the road. He has a 3.18 ERA in 10 road starts this season (he's 5-0 and the Brewers 7-3), compared to a 6.45 home ERA (and a 1.70 WHIP) in 10 starts at Miller Park where's he's 6-4. Davies is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts versus Washington (Brewers are 2-0), winning at Nationals Park last season. Jackson took a big step toward securing the No. 5 spot in the rotation after yielding two runs (both on solo HRs) and just three hits in seven innings of Washington's 4-3 road victory over the LA Angels on July 18. "It felt good coming over here with a fresh start," said Jackson, who was 10-11 with the Nationals back in 2012. Jackson began his career way back in 2003 (with the Dodgers) and is 6-7 with a 3.98 ERA in 17 starts versus Milwaukee (teams are 8-9)..

He made just three relief appearances (7.20 ERA) and was designated for assignment on June 11. He elected free agency on June 13 and on June 16, Jackson signed to a minor league deal by the Nationals. He made his first start since September of 2016 while with the Padres last week. For one, I'm not optimistic that what we saw in that one is what we'll see the rest of the season. Yes, Davies has been a strong road pitcher in 2017 but the Washington lineup features three of NL's top batting averages. Murphy ranks second at .341, Harper third at .336 and Zimmerman eighth at .318. That trio has also accounted for 61 HRs. The Nats are MLB's second-highest scoring team averaging 5.57 RPG.
