The set-up: The Colorado Rockies were one strike from a 1-0 victory in Tuesday's game before Cleveland's Austin Jackson delivered a tying RBI single and Yan Gomes followed with a walk-off, three-run HR, giving the Indians a 4-1 victory in the first of a two-game IL series between the two playoff contenders.The Indians moved four games ahead of the Royals atop the AL Central, while the Rockies maintained a comfortable six-game lead over the Brewers for the NL's final wild card spot (Colorado is just a half-game back of the D'backs for the No. 1 wild card spot).
The pitching matchup: Rookie Antonio Senzatela (10-4 & 4.78 ERA) goes for the Rockies and Trevor Bauer (10-8 & 5.00 ERA) for the Indians. The Rockies have been trying to manage the innings of the 22-year-old, who has pitched out of the bullpen in five of his last seven appearances. He lasted only four innings in his last start, giving up six runs in a 7-2 loss at St. Louis on July 24 after winning his previous start with five innings of three-run ball in a 9-7 win on July 18. The Rockies are 11-6 (plus-$536) in Senzatela's 17 starts in 2017, including him beating the Indians 11-3 back on June 6 in Colorado, giving up three runs in 6 1/3 innings. Bauer is coming off an outstanding effort, limiting the New York Yankees to one run on seven hits over seven innings in a 7-2 win August 4. That gives him three consecutive wins, getting to 10-8 on the season. However, Bauer lasted only 3 1/3 innings in an 8-1 loss at Colorado on June 7, getting tagged for four runs while tying a season high with five walks. He's 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in two career starts vs. Colorado.
The pick: The Rockies still look like a solid playoff team (see above) and also rank second in MLB's moneyline standings, at plus-$1645. However, the team's road woes are very real, as last night's loss makes them 5-18 on the road since June 11. Also, Colorado rookie Senzatela may have 'hit a wall.' This marks just his first start since July 24, as the team tries to manage his innings. However, it's not working. He owns an 8.05 ERA over his last five starts with Colorado going 2-3, after the Rockies had won nine of his first 12 starts in 2017. Bauer's 2017 numbers are far from pretty but he does own a 2.25 ERA in winning three consecutive starts. Make Cleveland an 8* play.
