The two teams have taken took turns pounding each other in the first two of this four-game set, as the Reds hit four HRs in an 11-3 win on Monday but then watched San Diego jump on top quickly (led 7-0) in a 7-3 Padres win last night. Recently, the Reds are enduring a stretch in which they've been held to four or fewer runs in five of the last six games, while the Padres are last in the National League in runs scored (430 / 3.84 per). San Diego checks in at 50-62 and Cincinnati at 46-67.
The pitching matchup: Travis Wood (2-3, 6.49 ERA) starts for San Diego and Asher Wojciechowski (2-1 & 4.15 ERA) for Cincy. Wood is still getting acclimated to his new surroundings in San Diego since being acquired from the Kansas City Royals in July. Wood will be making his third start for San Diego since the trade, having earned a win at home over Pittsburgh with six strong innings on July 28 but then was not quite as sharp at the Pirates last Friday, when he was reached for four runs on six hits in five innings. Wood spent the first seven years of his career in the NL Central, including the first two with Cincinnati and is 4-5 with a 2.91 ERA in 27 career games (11 starts / teams are 4-7) against the Reds. Wojciechowski spent all of July in the bullpen but got a chance to get back into the rotation last Friday against St. Louis and earned a win while allowing one run and three hits in five innings. However, his 7.79 ERA in four starts bridging May and June caused him to lose his spot. Wojciechowski is making his first career appearance against the Padres.
The pick: The Padres are a poor road team, entering this game 21-35, while allowing 5.54 RPG away from home in 2017. It also sure doesn't inspire confidence that starter Travis Wood has a career 4.77 ERA at Great American Ball Park, either.
