The set-up: The Seattle Mariners opened a four-city, 13-day, 12-game road trip this past weekend and took two of three from the Rays in Tampa. The Mariners arrived in Atlanta for a three-game series on Monday and were able win win 6-5. At 64-62, they are one game back of the Twins for the AL's final wild card spot, with the Angels just a half-game ahead of them. The Mariners have their work cut out for themselves, as in order to stay in the wild card chase, they will have to navigate a stretch that has them playing 21 away games in 28 contests. The good news is, that after opening 8-20 on the road, the Mariners have gone 22-10 on the road since that awful start. Atlanta fell to 55-68 on the season with the defeat, losing for the 23rd time in 33 games since July 17, the most losses by any team during that stretch.
The pitching matchup: Marco Gonzales (0-0 & 8.44 ERA) will get another try in Seattle's rotation and will face Lucas Sims (1-3 & 5.24 ERA) of Atlanta. Gonzales has failed to pitch more than 4 1/3 innings in three starts since joining Seattle's rotation on Aug. 6, giving up 10 ERs in 12 2/3 innings (7.11 ERA). He had made one start for St. Louis prior to being acquired in July, surrendering five runs in 3 1/3 innings. Sims is a rookie and is coming off his first major-league victory in his fourth start of 2017 this past Thursday at Colorado. He allowed two runs on five hits in five innings of a 10-4 victory. However, he had lost his first three starts, giving up a total of 12 ERs over 17 1/3 innings (5.09 ERA)..
The pick: Gonzales was a first-round draft choice of St. Louis back in 2013 and Sims was Atlanta's first-round pick in the 2012 draft. Gonzales made his major league debut for the Cardinals in 2014, then sat out the 2016 season with left elbow surgery. However, he returned to go 6-4 with a 2.90 ERA over 11 starts in 2017 for Triple-A Memphis, before being acquired by the Mariners. Gonzales was 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA in Triple-A before being called up to make his first start for Seattle on Aug. 6. Sims worked his way through the Atlanta's minor league system and was the organization's pitcher of the year in 2013. He began 2017 at Triple-A Gwinnett and went 7-4 with a 3.75 ERA in 20 appearances, 19 of them starts. He had 132 strikeouts and only 36 walks in 115 1/3 innings for the G-Braves. Two promising rookies will both be making their fifth big-league start of the season in this one but Gonzales will be backed by the 'hotter' and much-better team. Make Seattle an 8* play.
