(MLB) NY Mets vs. Cincinnati,
Money Line: -154.00 Cincinnati (Home)
Result: Win
The Mets have lost 11 of their last 15 and with a 57-73 record on the season, are just "playing out the string." However, as they take the field tonight in the opener of a three-game series with the Reds, they may just find some solace (and hope) in the fact that they have won 19 of their last 21 games against Cincinnati, including 14 straight going back to September 2014. Like the Mets, the NL Central cellar-dwelling Reds (55-76) are also just counting the days until October 1, MLB's final regular season day.

The pitching matchup: A pair of rookies square off tonight, Chris Flexen (3-2 & 5.79 ERA) for New York and Sal Romano (3-5 & 4.96 ERA). Flexen was promoted from Double-A to replace the injured Zack Wheeler back in late-July and will be making his seventh start of 2017 for the Mets. He posted his third win in four outings this past Wednesday after allowing two runs on six hits in a season-high six innings of a 4-2 triumph versus Arizona. This will be his first time seeing the Reds. Romano will take the mound for the 11th time in 2017 (team is 4-6 his first 10) and while he certainly hasn't been a "show-stopper," he is coming off two of his better starts this season. He settled for a no-decision despite working a career high-tying seven innings in his second straight start Thursday. He allowed just one run in a 4-3 win at Atlanta on Aug. 18 and then gave up just two runs on six hits against the Chicago Cubs in a 4-2 Cincy win the last time out. Like Flexen, Romano will be facing this opponent for the first time.

The pick: I've already noted New York's recent dominnation of the Reds but the Mets are a mess right now. Furthermore, how does one back Flexen on the road where in three starts, he's allowed 10 ERs on 11 hits in just 11 innings for an 8.18 ERA and 2.55 WHIP? As for Romano, he said after his last outing, "You have to be consistent, that's what they're looking for. If I can have a three-pitch mix, I can be successful." That's been the case his last two starts, as he's allowed three ERs on 11 hits with 10Ks over 14 innings (1.93 ERA). Make the Reds an 8* play.
