The set-up: The 66-66 St. Louis Cardinals have not given up on the idea of making a late playoff push and they open a four-game series tonight against the last-place Giants (NL West), who check in just 53-82 on the season, plus own MLB's worst moneyline mark (minus-$3449). The Cards are six games back of the Cubs in the NL Central and in the wild card chase, sit 5 1/2 games back of the 72-61 Colorado Rockies, who own the NL's second wild card spot. All I can say about the Giants is, "not so much!"
The pitching matchup: Michael Wacha (9-7 & 4.33 ERA) takes the mound for St. Louis and Madison Bumgarner (3-6, 2.85 ERA) for San Francisco. Wacha is on a three-start losing streak, in which he owns a 10.22 ERA. However, he did shut out the Giants for six innings in an eventual 6-5 loss in St. Louis back on May 19, leaving him 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in five career starts vs. the Giants (Cards are 3-2). Bumgarner has pitched well since returning from a separated shoulder that resulted from a dirt-bike accident in April but is just 2-2 with a 2.73 ERA in five August starts. That pretty sums up his season, as despite excellent numbers, the owns MLB's second-worst moneyline mark, as the Giants are 3-10 in his all of his 2017 starts, leaving him minus-$1248 at $100/game. Bumgarner is only 4-5 with a 4.04 ERA in 10 career starts vs. St. Louis (Giants are 5-5).
The pick: Wacha has sure been shaky lately but that 1.50 career ERA vs. the Giants in five lifetime starts makes me optimistic he can handle the sad-sack Giants. As for Bumgarner, forget about his W-L record. Note that he owns a 2.85 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and .227 BAA against in his 13 starts here in 2017. Make the Under a 10* play.
