Los Angeles: Captain Anze Kopitar capped a three-point performance by scoring his second goal of the game with 2:14 remaining in the third period as Los Angeles matched the club record for the longest point streak to start a season, which was set when it began 1995-96 with a 4-0-3 mark. Kopitar has recorded four multi-point performances in 2017-18, including a pair of three-point efforts. Right winger Dustin Brown had an empty-net goal and three assists on Saturday. Kopitar and Brown have taken advantage of the more upbeat tempo encouraged by new coach John Stevens. Both players have a team-leading 11 points and each is plus-11, tied for first in the NHL. Brooks Laich made his debut for Los Angeles on Saturday without scoring, having just signed a one-year contract worth $650,000 on Thursday. Jake Muzzin is riding a six-game point streak after notching three against Columbus.
Toronto: Auston Matthews (seven goals & five assists) and William Nylander (three goals & six assists) each recorded a goal and an assist in Saturday's loss. Matthews has at least one point in all but one of his eight contests, registering three two-point efforts over his last four. Roman Polak is back in the fold, as the veteran defenseman agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.1 million contract on Sunday. The Maple Leafs were picked as Stanley Cup favorites this past week by two betting sites but promptly lost 6-3 on Saturday at Ottawa.
The pick: "They smacked us around," Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock said after practice Sunday. "But I also think you need lessons in your life.
