The set-up: The New York Mets opened the 2018 season on an 11-1 run but visited Philadelphia last night to begin a three-game series with the Phillies having lost 16 of their last 23 games, including eight of nine to fall to 18-17. Philadelphia lost four of five to open the season but turned things around since then with a 21-11 run to reach 22-15 overall, welcoming the Mets to Citizens Bank Park off a four-game sweep of San Francisco . The Phillies waited until June 15 to win their 22nd game of the season in 2017 but are "a month ahead of schedule" here in 2018 plus owned a 15-5 record in their home park. However, through all their ups and downs over recent years, the New York Mets have always been able to rely on one thing and that's dominating the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets stole a win from the Phillies in Friday's series opener when Michael Conforto hammered a two-run HR with one out in the top of the ninth inning and Devin Mesoraco followed with a solo shot as New York rallied against Phillies closer Hector Noris for a 3-1 triumph. It was just the second victory in the last 10 games for the Mets but their third win in as many tries against Philadelphia this season and their 41st in the last 60 meetings.
The pitching matchup: Noah Syndergaard (2-1, 3.09 ERA) will head to teh mound on Saturday for New York, while Zach Eflin (1-0, 0.71 ERA) gets the nod for Philadelphia. Syndergaard has given the Mets a chance to win each time he's been on the mound in 2018 but while the New York Mets won each of Syndergaard's first five starts this season, they've lost his last three. The New York flamethrower's shortest start of the year, a four-inning, two-run outing April 4, came against Philadelphia but he is 4-1 with a 2.06 ERA in seven career starts against the Phillies. Eflin will square off against Syndergaard, as he continues to make his case for a long-term spot in the rotation. He was called up to replace an injured Ben Lively, Eflin and has been dominant in two starts. He gave up just one run on three hits against the Marlins in his 2018 debut and followed it up with 6 2/3 shutout innings against the Giants on Monday.
He has allowed only seven hits in 12 2/3 innings for the Phillies this season and is off a game in which he struck out nine Giants in his last outing.
The pick: Syndergaard owns an 0.94 WHIP and .194 batting average against in seven career starts against the Phillies and takes the mound on Saturday having completed at least six innings in four straight starts while posting a 3.20 ERA but has zero wins to show for it (Mets are 1-3). The Mets offense has come up short each time in Syndergaard's last three outings, with the team's .230 average and .684 OPS ranking 10th and 13th, respectively, in the National League entering the weekend. However, see above regarding New York's dominance over Philadephia in recent years. Yes, Eflin has pitched very well in his two 2018 starts, but win Monday over the Giants was his first victory since Aug. 8 of last year. Eflin pitched for the Phillies in both of the last two seasons and prior to this year, owned a 5.85 ERA in 22 major league starts (Philkliesd were 8-14). Three of those starts have come against the Mets with Eflin going 0-2 with a 4.41 ERA. Make the Mets an 8* play.
