The Rays are coming into this game playing much better recently as they have won their last 3 straight games and their offense has also been much better in these as they have scored at least 5 runs in each of their last 3 as well as 4 runs or more in each of their last 5 straight. They are going up against a Yankees team that has not been playing well recently as they have lost their last 3 straight games, but they have been in some higher scoring games as 3 of their last 4 have seen 7 or more runs total and they are also going to be desperate to avoid getting swept at home here. Gerrit Cole is starting for the Yankees in this game and he is 9-2 with a 2.64 ERA this season. He has been pitching much better recently but he has also been consistently allowing runs in his recent home starts. He has allowed at least 2 earned runs in each of his last 3 straight as well as allowing at least 3 earned runs in 2 of those. As good as he has been pitching recently, he is still going to get into trouble against this Rays offense that has been one of the best in the MLB all season and is starting to get very hot again. Cole also pitched against the Rays twice this season, allowing 2 earned runs in 1 of those and 5 earned runs in the other start. Shane McClanahan is starting for the Rays here and he is 11-1 with a 3.00 ERA this season. He has been very good this season but recently he has been struggling in his starts as he has allowed 8 earned runs in the 9 innings pitched of his last 2 starts and has also consistently allowed at least 2 earned runs in each of his last 5 straight starts, allowing 3 earned runs or more in 3 of his last 4. He also pitched against the Yankees earlier this season in New York and he allowed 4 earned runs in 4 innings of that start which has been one of his worst starts of the season. The Rays have the better offense that has been heating up again and they are going to score runs in this game so the Yankees will need to score runs themselves to keep up and they will be desperate to get going offensively in this game as they try to avoid the sweep. Between these two teams, there will be enough runs in this game to push it over the total.
