The set-up: The Nationals rallied for five runs in the final two innings Wednesday night, snapping a four-game skid with a 7-6 win. Then, saw their Thursday game with Baltimore get rained out. That allows them to an extra day of preparation and to skip A.J. Cole's turn, as they open a three-game home series with the Phillies. The Nationals still own the NL's best record (22-12), while the Phillies have been in a free-fall since ripping off six consecutive victories from April 20-27. Philadelphia opens this weekend series having dropped 10 of its last 12, giving them a 13-19 record. Philadelphia just gave up 21 runs in a losing both contests of a two-game interleague series versus Seattle and now hits the road for nine straight games.
The pitching matchup: Nick Pivetta (0-2 & 5.40 ERA) will be on the mound for Philadelphia and Tanner Roark (3-1 & 3.46 ERA) for Washington. Pivetta was a fourth-round draft pick of Washington in 2013 and will get a second crack at that organization as he prepares to make his third career start. He was tagged for four runs on nine hits over five innings on May 5 versus the Nationals (0-1 & 7.20 ERA), serving up three solo HRs. In Pivetta's other 2017 start,he gave up just two runs but nine hits in five innings at the Dodgers on April 30. Washington's bullpen cost Roark a victory last time out (a recurring theme for Washington starters this season), after he permitted two runs (zero earned) on only two hits over six innings on Sunday. Roark also did not factor in the decision against Philadelphia on April 15, despite working a season-high seven innings and yielding two runs on four hits. Roark is 4-4 with a 3.11 ERA in 12 career starts against the Phillies (team is 5-7).

Pivetta will make just his third career start (he's allowed 18 hits in just 10 innings of work, so far!) plus Roark has allowed three ERs or less in six of his seven starts in 2017, posting a solid 1.15 WHIP and .221 BAA. Make the Nats an 8* play.
