The set-up: The Phillies and Mariners will wrap up their two-game IL series Wednesday afternoon in Seattle, following Tuesday night's game in which the MLB-worst Phillies scored four times in the ninth inning on their way to an 8-2 victory. The Phillies are going nowhere again in 2017 (at 25-51, they are 20 1/2 games back in the NL East) but while the 39-40 Mariners are 13 1/2games behind Houston in the AL West, almost the entire AL is within striking distance of a wild card spot (Seattle is just two games out of the final spot).
The pitching matchup: Mark Leiter (1-0 & 3.60 ERA) takes the mound for Philly and Felix Hernandez (3-2 & 4.68 ERA) for the Mariners. Mark Leiter, Sr. pitched 11 seasons in the major leagues, including two seasons with the Phillies. He was in attendance when Mark Leiter Jr. made his first major league start last Friday at Arizona. He pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits with one walk and five strikeouts to earn his first victory. "I was just trying to go out there and do my best, trying to keep the team in there," said Leiter, whose uncle Al also pitched 19 seasons in the big leagues. If nothing else, the young Leiter has good genes. "King Felix" will be making his second start since coming back from the disabled list. Hernandez was out from April 26 to June 22 with bursitis in his right shoulder, the first time he landed been on the DL with an arm problem in a decade. Hernandez is unfamiliar with Philadelphia, with just one career starts against them (0-1 & 3.86 ERA).
The pick: The Phillies surprised last night but this is not a good baseball team and even after Tuesday's win, the Phillies check in at 11-31 on the road. Meanwhile, Seattle has put themselves back in the wild card chase with an 18-11 run in which the team has averaged more than six runs per game and batted nearly .300 as a team in that span. Lastly, taking "King Felix" (Seattle is 9-2 in Hernandez's last 11 home starts) over Leiter (he had pitched 19 innings and posted a 4.74 ERA in 12 relief appearances prior to his first start) is a "no-brainer.' Make Seattle a 6* play.
