The set-up: The 13-3 Los Angeles opened the week with a three-game sweep of the Rangers in Texas and after Saturday's 5-3 triumph in Kansas City, LA is on the verge of sweeping this four-game series against the Royals, as well. The Angels have now won nine in a row on the road following a season-opening loss in Oakland. Two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani has been living up to his hype in both facets of his game over the first few weeks of the season, with two wins as a starter, while batting .367 with three HRs and 11 RBI. Kansas City is 1-5 as it completes a seven-game homestand but don't blame Mike Moustakas, who is riding a seven-game hitting streak that began with five straight multi-hit performances and features three HRs.
The pitching matchup: Japanese right-hander Shohei Ohtani (2-0, 2.08 ERA) will start for LA and lefty Eric Skoglund (0-1, 9.64 ERA) for KC. Ohtani attempts to become the first Los Angeles Angels pitcher to win his first three starts since Jared Weaver in 2006 and also gets the chance to display his skills on the mound against a team other than Oakland. He faced the A's in each of his first two major-league starts, allowing just three runs and four hits with 18 strikeouts (while issuing only two walks) over 13 innings in winning both outings. Skoglund's 2018 season debut was a rough one, as he was tagged for five runs and six hits while hitting three batters over 4 2/3 innings of a loss to Seattle on Tuesday. He has not won since his major-league debut back on May 30 of last year, when he limited Detroit to two hits and a walk in 6 1/3 scoreless innings. Skoglund, who is 0-3 with a 13.23 ERA in five starts and two relief appearances since the victory and will be facing Los Angeles for the first time in his career.
The pick: The Angels have been clicking offensively during their overall seven-game winning streak, as they've outscoring their opponents 49-15, while scoring at least five times in each victory. Skoglund seem like easy pickins' for LA but then again, maybe not. As for Ohtani, his lone mistake has been allowing a three-run HR in his debut, so expect him to have no trouble with a KC lineup averaging a MLB-low 3.00 RPG. KC also ranks last (30th) with just five HRs, is batting .231 (21st) plus owns a .623 OPS, which ranks 25th. Make the Under a 10* play.
